The brown ring on the ceiling tells you where water arrived. The roof repair needs to follow that water back to its entry point.
Water travels before it shows
Rain entering at a vent boot can run along the pipe. Water passing a roof-to-wall detail can move across decking or framing before it reaches a ceiling joint. The indoor mark is useful information, but it does not locate the roof opening by itself.
This is why a patch directly above the stain can miss the cause. The roofer needs to connect the room and timing you describe with the covering, flashing and penetrations above that area. A wind-driven leak can involve a detail that sheds an ordinary shower but admits water when wind pushes it sideways.
Repair the entry, then the damaged materials
Once the opening is found, the repair needs a sound boundary. A failed boot needs a properly integrated flashing connection. A wall joint needs correctly lapped flashing and a working connection to the wall surface. Damaged wood below the covering needs its own repair rather than a new shingle over soft material.
Leavenworth Roof Pros can help you start with a free roof inspection. Tell us the room and roughly when you noticed the water. Tracing the entry point is the roofer’s work.
