Build a continuous single-ply roof

TPO is a thermoplastic single-ply membrane. Sheets are joined with heat-welded seams, while flashing closes the surface around curbs, pipes and roof edges. Those transitions need the same attention as the broad roof field.

The complete system also includes the deck, insulation, attachment and drainage design. A membrane thickness by itself does not describe the performance of the installed roof.

TPO seams, attachment and insulation

The system is designed from the deck upward.

ComponentWhat needs resolution
Heat-welded seams
Suitable conditions, clean compatible material and tested seam work help create the continuous surface.
Attachment
Mechanical attachment or adhesion needs to fit the deck and specified wind design.
Insulation and cover board
Dry stable material provides support; compressive strength and compatible layers depend on the assembly.
Curbs and edges
Corners, terminations and flashing need system-compatible pieces and correct attachment.

Repair and replacement decisions

TPO repair depends on the condition and compatibility of the existing membrane.

A local repair

A puncture or defined flashing defect in sound material can support a compatible patch or rebuilt detail after correct preparation.

A larger roof project

Widespread seam, attachment or moisture problems need an assembly assessment. Covering wet material with a new surface leaves the underlying problem unresolved.
