Shingle Types and Options
Compare asphalt shingle appearance and performance without confusing the two. Explore common categories and what the installed roof still needs.
Choose appearance and performance separately
A shingle’s shape and color affect how the roof looks. Its product construction, tests and installation requirements answer different questions. Those choices belong beside the deck, underlayment and flashing scope.
Use the categories below to see the differences. The photographs are illustrative, not a product catalog or a promise of a particular color on your house.

Explore asphalt shingle categories
Choose a category to compare the roof appearance and the practical selection question.
Architectural shingles
Laminated asphalt construction creates a layered profile and varied shadows. Specific products differ in color blends, dimensions, attachment and terms.
This is the material category used in the cost calculator’s supported planning example. The roof still needs sound decking and properly detailed protective layers.

Impact-rated shingles
An impact rating describes a product’s performance in a defined test. It does not establish that hail cannot damage the installed roof.
Look at the specific product and test alongside appearance, fastening and warranty terms. Insurance discounts depend on the insurer and policy rather than the category name alone.

Designer shingles
Designer profiles use shaped or wider tabs to create a more distinctive roof appearance. The selected product determines its actual construction and installation requirements.
The house’s roof shape, visible edges and any applicable property review should be considered before ordering.

What an impact rating means
Keep the product test, roof system and financial terms separate.
